Get the Antioxidants, Lose the Crap

We just got some really great spam in the Natural Me Myspace Group about antioxidants. It was from a jii jiii juice pusher and it’s amazing how much you can learn from a spammer if you take the time to listen in between the sales pitch.

For real, it was like high school science class except with a financial motive but, what a great review.

Let me copy & paste all these wonderful nerdy words to know:

An antioxidant is a molecule capable of slowing or preventing the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation is a chemical reaction that transfers electrons from a substance to an oxidizing agent. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals, which start chain reactions that damage cells. Antioxidants terminate these chain reactions by removing free radical intermediates, and inhibit other oxidation reactions by being oxidized themselves.

Antioxidants are found in many natural foods – from berries to broccoli, and even coffee and chocolate! They offer super protection for the body against all types of diseases and problems – especially those caused by free radicals.

Free radicals are molecules which have separated in awkward manners, leaving an free unpaired electron floating around (free radicals). These “free radicals” are unstable, and they can react with other compounds, trying to get back their lost electron. This can cause unhealthy issues with everyday metabolic task.

Free radicals tend to attack the nearest stable molecule in an attempt to take an electron from it. This causes that molecule to become a free radical, which will then attack other molecules. This process would be left to grow exponentially if it were not for something to neutralize the process.

Eventually, this can lead to conditions such as cancer. Antioxidants help protect against damage from free radicals.

Antioxidants can actually give one of their electrons to a free radical, ending the cycle of reaction! The great thing about antioxidants is that they are stable, even if they lose an electron. Its a win/win situation.

So they can protect the body, without causing additional damage. There are several types of antioxidants that we know of, and there may be dozens, or even hundreds that we haven’t yet discovered.

Lycopene is a potent antioxidant that was not even discovered until the 1980s. Before then, we had no idea just how great tomatoes could actually be for us!

This is why it’s so important to eat a balanced diet. You can take vitamin supplements that contain antioxidants, but what about those that haven’t yet been discovered?

And that’s when he slipped in the sales pitch but hey, wasn’t he doing so good up until then? I was eating it up. He also gifted us with two bonus “Top 10” Lists (which I just love as I adore lists) and the second one is actually a Top 15 – whoo hooo!

Antioxidants are rated by an ORAC value (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity). The higher the ORAC the more successful the free radical protection.

10 Ways to Get More Antioxidants into your daily diet!

  1. I was just reading an article about how antioxidants can help in sun protection in Natural Health. (does that count as an advertisement? haha) It listed all these foods, and mentioned that omega 3 fatty acids can also help. The article also said to eat lots of green leaf vegetables and drink black and green tea because they also contain antioxidants. 🙂
