Plastic in Our Oceans

This video was featured at the Ecolect Blog, to help spread the word about plastic debris in our water.  Captain Charles Moore of the Algalita Marine Research Foundation was the first to discover the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, an endless floating waste of plastic trash.

water filter The ocean’s in a sad sad shape folks – plastic bottles, caps, shopping bags and even super small plastic particulate that is just everywhere. We would have to run the ocean through a filter to get it out.  Which is not an option by the way – Heck, I don’t want to be known as the girl who started that rumor.  (“Sadie said that they are going to filter the ocean…”)

Unfortunately, there in nothing but truth with the negative effects of the large amounts of junk in the water.  This plastic is killing all types of ocean sea life, especially birds.  Shame shame on us.

  1. Ok, I watched this with my kids. It prompted a huge discussion with them during lunch, where I think I broke their hearts. Instead of writing about it all here, I’ll just give you the link: http://thebluenymph.blogspot.com/2009/03/broken-hearts-broken-future.html
(I did put a link on there back to here too) 🙂
Thanks for sharing this Sadie. And don’t worry, I won’t start a rumor saying you’ve said they’re planning on filtering the ocean. 😉 (but, it would’ve made an interesting campaign point .. instead of off-shore drilling how about off-shore filtering plants?)
